2020-21 Wisconsin High School Rankings
2020-21 Wisconsin High School Rankings: 220
Brooks Empey is head and shoulders above the rest of this class, with wins over #2, #6, #7, and #10, all by fall in under two and a half minutes.
While Orion Boe and Nathan Moynihan split two matches at state, Moynihan's impressive hit list (Nick Roller three times, Keith Tourtillott twice, and Drake Anderson) easily put him in the two-spot. After him, setting the order of Boe, Cole Ebert, and Gunner Hoffman was challenging:
-Boe has pins over #7 and #10, along with the Moynihan split, but the rest of his wins are less impressive.
-Ebert has understandable losses to undefeated state champs Tyler Hannah and Ethan Heil, an 11-2 loss to Ethan Tegels, and a weird upset loss to Andrew Elmhorst at sectionals, but he balances that out with two wins over Frank Koeppel, who beat Moynihan and Gill-Howard.
-Hoffmann owns three wins over Ethan Tegels and both of state champ Jake Rau's losses (one by injury), but starting in the sectional finals, he lost four times in six matches, including a surprising loss to #8 Kyle Dietzen. Defying that head-to-head result, and ranking Hoffmann ahead of Dietzen, was a tough decision.
State runner-up Skylar Gill-Howard falls behind that group thanks to the transitivity of losses to Frank Koeppel and Caleb Willmann. Ben Kawczynski slots in after that, with losses to Boe, Ebert, and Gill-Howard. Kyle Dietzen and Mac Strand split two matches last season, but Dietzen noses ahead based on the Hoffmann win. The last spot could have gone any number of ways but landed on Alec Perelshtein over Milan Monchilovich.
Much like Dawson Dembroski, Jaren Rohde may have also played into the consideration, but his season ended in mid-December because of injury. He qualified for state in Division 1 in 2019, as a freshman at 220.
